What is the Blue Cave in Dubrovnik?
The Blue Cave (Modra Špilja) is a natural sea cave located on the island of Koločep in the Elaphiti archipelago, just 30 minutes by boat from Dubrovnik. The cave is famous for its stunning electric blue water, created when sunlight enters through an underwater opening and reflects off the white sandy bottom.
Unlike Croatia's more famous Blue Cave on Biševo island near Vis, Dubrovnik's Blue Cave allows visitors to swim inside the cave—making it a more interactive and memorable experience. The cave is approximately 15 meters deep and features crystal-clear water that glows with an otherworldly blue color, especially during midday when sunlight is at its peak.
The best time to visit is between May and September when weather conditions are optimal and the blue glow is most vibrant. Most tours, including ours, combine the Blue Cave with nearby Green Caves and a stop at Šunj Beach on Lopud island—the only sandy beach in the Dubrovnik area.
